GROUND OF BEING

“Now it happens that the immanentist approach, which sees God as directly and intimately present in the very ground of our being (while being at the same time infinitely transcendent), is actually much closer to the contemplative tradition.” -- Thomas Merton in Contemplation in a World of Action

The following is inspired by our Men’s Meeting conversation March 29, 2005 at Enterbeing:

GROUND OF BEING

Ground:
leaves of trees,
thousand shattered rocks,
old bones scuttled, scattered
irreducible sand subdivided to its essence
mixed in mystery by nature’s alchemists and witches in the dark of night.

Ground:
source of life,
fairy dust from which all life arises,
earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust:
Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return!
Not only You, O Human Ones,
but all Creation from the Ground of Being.

Dark mystery below,
beneath the consciousness of our minds,
under the radar of our scrutiny,
behind the door which no one can open,
where the roots lie in life’s starter mix,
and the stems and flowers return after chasing the sun,

Ground above
Where stars are waiting to be born,
Before of beginning, source of starting, origin’s mother,
Ground of Being:
How can we stand in You?
Create a Ground Swell called Love?
Feel Your Heart of Justice?
Find Common Ground with one another, with earth and skies,
With You?
